The SLHAL was founded on 6th of May 2005 by Alhaji M.Kargbo, Mohamed Sesay, Chernor Bah and Donald Warne
Membership grew rapidly and and at present, the SLHAL has 40 registered members.
The SLHAL has two aims
1: supporting Sierra Leonans in Leiden
At our monthly meetings we discuss topics that are relevant to our life in Leiden, like what kind of schools to choose for our children, how to find a good doctor, lawyer or social worker, where to get information about jobs, housing, health care and community services.
2: contributing to the (re)development of Sierra Leone after the Civil War
After the Civil War ended, the children of Sierra Leone, who represent its future, often have no means to get a basic education, mainly because the War has left them poor and without any family. We decided to help the children by paying for their education. At present we support 11 children in Sierra Leone.
We raise funds for this project by donating money individually and by organizing dance- parties
The SLHAL has connections with and collaborates with several other organizations in the Netherlands:
The SLHAL is a contributing member of the Sierra Leone Central Union, an umbrella organization for all registered Sierra Leone organizations in the Netherlands
The SLHAL is part of the PVL (Platform Vluchtelingen in Leiden).
